Gremlins enjoy scoring spree
KARNS CITY — Karns City's goalkeepers could have taken Tuesday night off and no one would have noticed.
Figuratively playing on a downward slope, the Gremlins overwhelmed visiting Keystone, 16-0, in boys soccer play.
“A game like this doesn't help us,” KC coach Jim Grenninger said. “If anything, we tend to get lazy and we start chasing the ball. It's hard to tell how good (our performance) really was.”
With an assist from sophomore Myles McCully, midfielder Colson Ritzert opened KC's scoring avalanche not even a minute into the match. Sophomores Myles McCully, Jacob Callihan, and Ritzert all netted a pair of goals in the first 40 minutes.
Adam Smith, Lathan Price, Mallick Metcalfe, and Dane King also added markers, putting KC up 10-0 at the break. Smith and midfielder Zach Kelly each notched two assists.
Even with the halftime score, Grenninger was displeased with his squad's sloppy play. Sometimes with a barrage of scoring like the Gremlins had, he said, players can lose their formation in trying to run up the score.
Still, Grenninger was happy to get all of his players on the field. Starting goalkeeper Lucas Yasika even got to try his hand at midfield in the second half.
“At the start, we were kind of rough, but that's all part of the game,” Ritzert said. “It just took us a little to get warmed up.”
Within the opening ten minutes of the second half, both Ritzert and McCully rounded out hat tricks. Then Kelly deposited another before Grenninger subbed out a handful of starters.
Senior defender Cole Sherwin recorded his first career goal with little under nine minutes to go. Price and defender Noah Mourer closed out the scoring.
Grenninger hopes the team's rate of scoring continues against Redbank Valley on Thursday.
“It's been getting kind of hard to find someone who can put the ball consistently in the net,” Grenninger said. “Maybe this will bring that attitude out of them and they'll be more sure of their shots.”
