Knoch Sports HOF sets inductions

7 to be enshrined at Sept. 3 football home game

JEFFERSON TWP — The Knoch High School Sports Hall of Fame will welcome its sixth induction class Sept. 3 during the Knights' home game against Freeport.

The HOF Committee suspended its activities in 2020, but will have additional inductees over the next few years.

Knoch's 2021 HOF induction class features Knoch graduates Barbara Lawson Yates, Gary Bastin, Michael Crouch, John Ivory, Kelly Meyers Coffield, Amanda Sharbaugh Spaeder and former teacher-coach Larry Kunselman.

A 1979 graduate, she earned nine varsity letters at Knoch — four in track, three in basketball and two in volleyball.She was the 1978 volleyball MVP and a team captain and was MVP of the 1978-79 girls basketball team, leading the team in rebounds and serving as a captain. She was a tri-captain of the 1979 track team and was named most valuable field athlete.She went on to play basketball and volleyball at Grove City College.

A 1980 graduate, he was a member of the Knights' 1978 WPIAL championship football team and played for the 1979 WPIAL runner-up. He had nine career interceptions, including two returned for touchdowns in the playoffs.He was part of a school-record 4x100 relay team in track and went on to play four years of football at Army. He intercepted a pass thrown by Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie.

A 1984 graduate, he earned three letters each in football and track. As a tri-captain in football his senior year, he was named North Allegheny Free Press Defensive Player of the Year.He broke the school shot put record in 1983, the record standing for 30 years. He was a two-time all-conference football player and Defensive Lineman of the Year at Phoenix College.He is currently an assistant Knoch football coach.

A 1987 graduate, he earned eight varsity letters in all, competing in football, basketball and track. He set school records for passing yards and touchdown passes as the Knights' quarterback in 1985 and 1986.He was an all-conference selection as a quarterback and kicker. He wound up starting for four years at quarterback, kicker and punter for Washington & Jefferson College.

A 1995 graduate, she was a two-year MVP and team captain in volleyball. She was also a team captain and two-time team MVP in track.She earned silver and bronze medals in the 1992 Keystone State Games and went on to become a two-time captain while playing volleyball for four years at the University of Pittsburgh.

A 2008 graduate, she was a four-time WPIAL AAA all-section first team selection in soccer. She earned school records of 111 career goals and 260 points. She also earned two letters in track.She became a four-year starter in soccer at Gannon University, becoming that program's all-time leader in goals and points.

As Knoch's head football coach from 1980-88, his teams reached the WPIAL playoffs six times, including the WPIAL title game in 1982.He also spent six years as head football coach at Kiski Area before returning to Knoch as an assistant coach for a couple of seasons.
