Middlesex income tax did not fall despite pandemic

Township leaders' fears are allayed

Analysis showed that Middlesex Township earned income tax revenue is on the upswing and did not have a significant dropoff during the pandemic.

Year-to-date earned income tax collections to date in 2021 is up 21.01% compared to the same time frame in 2019 and 2020.

“It may be that the worst of the COVID economic impacts are behind us,” the report read.

Township manager Adam Hartwig presented the results of the analysis at a Middlesex Township Board of Supervisors meeting Wednesday.

“When the pandemic started, one of the things we were really concerned with was what would happen to revenues,” said Hartwig. “But we had a lot of people who worked remote, who were fortunate enough to be able to.”

The trajectory of earned income tax revenue in general in Middlesex has been going up, even during the pandemic, according to the findings: Fourth quarter 2020 payments were up by 10.2% as compared to the same time in 2019, allaying fears that COVID-19 had significantly damaged income tax revenues for the township.

Total collections were up by 7.32% in 2020 as compared to the previous year.

“Projecting the ultimate impacts of the pandemic on collections has been a moving target with many variables and factors, including the various federal and state aid and stimuli packages,” the report read. “We are cautiously optimistic that the trend seen in the third and fourth quarter collections will continue, and that the collections have normalized.”
