Gaiser Center has new director
Joseph Mahoney has been named executive director of the Ellen O'Brien Gaiser Center in Butler.
The center is a comprehensive regional resource for alcohol and substance use treatment.Mahoney most recently served as director of mental and behavioral health at Intermediate Unit 1, an educational services agency serving Greene, Washington and Fayette counties.Mahoney, who began as a school-based social worker at the Intermediate Unit, oversaw more than eight outpatient clinics in Greene County, a partial hospitalization program, 12 school-based mental health programs and more than 60 school-based, master-level social workers at IU1.He said he is thrilled to join the Gaiser family and looks forward to upholding the facility's reputation while incorporating innovations in care to meet changing needs in the community and families.“Over half a century, the Gaiser Center has established itself as a leader in evidence-based drug and alcohol treatment,” Mahoney said.Mahoney has worked for several weeks with outgoing Gaiser Center executive director Linda Franiewski to ensure a smooth transition of leadership.He earned bachelor degrees in psychology and English from Duquesne University and his master's in social work with a mental health certification from the University of Pittsburgh.Maloney is an avid fan of Pittsburgh's sports teams. He is a resident of Moon Township, Allegheny County, where he lives with his wife and two young sons.Franiewski retires this month after nearly 16 years at the helm of the Gaiser Center.During her tenure, Franiewski led the organization's rebranding and marked the center's 50th anniversary.
