Climbing the PIAA ladder

Mars boys lacrosse, SV boys volleyball reach Tuesday's state semifinals

Not easily, perhaps, but the Mars boys lacrosse and Seneca Valley boys volleyball teams remain standing.

Both teams will enter the PIAA semifinals in their respective sports after posting quarterfinal victories Saturday.

The Mars boys and girls lacrosse teams played a doubleheader at State College High School. The Lady Planets ended their season at 17-4 with a 21-8 quarterfinal loss to Strath Haven.

The Planet boys stayed unbeaten, moving to 21-0 with a 14-9 victory over Trinity. Mars built a sizable lead before Trinity surged in the final period.

“They scored three or four goals on us in the span of a few minutes,” Mars coach Bob Marcoux said. “It was a warm day and we were getting a little tired.

“But overall, it was a great effort against a very good team.”

Nick Crowley scored five goals to lead the Planets. Wes Scurci added three goals and six assists while Jack Dunham netted a pair of goals.

Mars will face Bishop Shanahan — a 16-4 winner over Chartiers Valley — in the Class 2A semifinals at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Cumberland Valley High School.

“We don't know much about them,” Marcoux admitted. “But the deeper you go in these playoffs, the tougher the opponents become.”

Seneca Valley's boys volleyball team knows all about that.

The Raiders (20-3) reached the semifinal round by defeating Upper Dublin, 3-1, Saturday at Bald Eagle High School.

SV dropped the first set 25-23 before taking the next three by scores of 25-11, 25-18, 25-21.

The Raiders will take on unbeaten North Allegheny in the semifinal round at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Fox Chapel High School. The Tigers swept Northeastern, 3-0, in Saturday's quarterfinals.

“We made 21 errors in that first set,” SV coach Brett Poirier said of the Upper Dublin match. “That was the worst set we've played all season.

“I told our guys that we handed them 21 points and still only lost by two. I was encouraged by that. All we had to do was clean up our play and we did.”

Coleman McDonough had 34 digs for Seneca Valley. Aden Uher contributed 37 assists while J.T. McCarthy had five blocks and six kills.

Michael Devlin paced the Raiders with 15 kills. Dawson Ward added nine and Nathan DeGraaf five.

All three Seneca Valley losses this season have been at the hands of North Allegheny.

“We were hoping this would happen,” Poirier said of a semifinal match with the Tigers. “Last time we played them, I was hoping the third time would be a charm. It was close, a matter of a couple of points ... Now maybe the fourth time will be a charm.”

A third WPIAL team, Hempfield, is taking on Central Dauphin in the other boys volleyball semifinal Tuesday.

Kellen Fletcher and Mya Cote scored two goals each in the Mars girls lacrosse loss. McKenna Merritt, Lydia Toparli, Zoey Krock and Grace Wu added a single tally each.

The Planets say goodbye to six seniors on the roster.

“We established a culture this year,” Mars coach Monica Ewansik said. “That needed to happen. Our boys lacrosse program has been successful for a while now and we had been lagging behind.

“The program took a major step forward this season. We won the WPIAL for the first time and raised the standard. That's going to help us in the years to come.

“I'm proud of what these girls accomplished,” Ewansik added.
