Butler volleyball bows, 3-1

Mars lacrosse stays unbeaten with playoff win

Butler's boys volleyball season ended Wednesday night with a tight 3-1 loss to Hempfield in a WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinal match at North Allegheny.

The Golden Tornado (13-9) won the second game 25-15, but dropped the other three by margins of 25-22, 29-27 and 26-24.

“We had our opportunities. We just didn't get it done,” Butler coach Lew Liparulo said. “But we played well.

“It was a great match.”

Tyler Gillis had 10 kills for the Golden Tornado. Carson Stein had 13 digs and 12 passes, Kaleb Wojnar 26 assists.

Eli Sutton went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, but Knoch wasn't able to scratch across enough runs in a 3-2 loss to Quaker Valley in the first round of the WPIAL Class 4A playoffs at Fox Chapel.Zack McMillen and Brady Wozniak each drove in runs for the Knights.Brayden Hageter got the loss on the mound, but pitched well.
