Progress Avenue work funded by state grant

CRANBERRY TWP — Add Progress Avenue to the list of infrastructure projects Cranberry will address with a grant from the state.

The state allocated $250,000 via a Multimodal Transportation Fund grant Monday for the purpose of installing a traffic light at the intersection of Route 19 and Progress Avenue in the north-central portion of the township.

“It's very exciting, $250,000 to build a traffic signal at the intersection, which is a needed improvement in the township,” Cranberry Township Manager Dan Santoro said.

It's also just one of the township's receipts from the fund, with Cranberry having earlier been allocated $1.3 million to improve capacity along Route 228 and $400,000 for multimodal portions of the MSA Thruway.

Because the grant is for multimodal infrastructure — that is, for more than one way of transportation — the Progress Avenue signal will additionally have pedestrian-friendly amenities, including a signal for pedestrians and a crosswalk, Santoro said.

Both Cranberry and a private entity, CNC LLC, worked on the grant application, and the company was named the applicant of the fund. Santoro said the township's partnering with the company is a continuation of its belief that working with industry can yield good results — as it has done with the MSA Thruway, for instance.

“We always strive to find those partnerships when we can,” he said. “We always recognize if you can build partnerships or coalitions — whether that be with private entities or in some instances with the multimunicipal efforts — those collaborations certainly are received better and produce better results. In this instance, the state noticed there are multiple entities, including private stakeholders, that buy into and are participating in the infrastructure improvements.”
