Twp. requests station crosswalk

MUDDY CREEK TOWNSHIP — The creation of a new roadside station on Route 422 in Muddy Creek Township hit a speed bump Wednesday.

Muddy Creek Township supervisors asked the developers of the Mega Truck Stop to look into installing a crosswalk at the intersection of Currie Road where the business will be built. While the developers and Muddy Creek have worked with PennDOT to install new traffic lights at the intersection, they would need to make additional plans to add a crosswalk.

Vice chairman Rick Saunders said the creation of the truck stop would likely draw heavy foot traffic from visitors traveling from Coopers Lake.

“It's going to have a sit-down restaurant, a pizza shop and a convenience store,” he said. “We want a pedestrian crosswalk for the safety of the public walking to the gas station.”

Saunders said the township supervisors began working with the Mega Truck Stop on plans about a year ago, but the coronavirus pandemic slowed development slightly.

He said the work the supervisors did about 20 years ago installing a Pilot Travel Center in the township informed the current supervisors on necessary precautions and information on the project.

Saunders also said the project could potentially be more costly to the township in the future should a regulation not be met by the developers in the planning or construction stages.

“We don't want the township to get stuck with hundreds of thousands of dollars later down the line on something we can do now,” Saunders said.
