Pa. near top of states with most new cases

Hospital treating 5 patients in ICU

Pennsylvania is among the top five states in the number of new daily cases of COVID-19, according to research from Johns Hopkins University.

The state was fourth among the states Wednesday with 4,722 new, confirmed cases and fourth with 36.8 cases among 100,000 residents, according to the JHU coronavirus resource center.

The 4,643 new cases reported Wednesday by the Pennsylvania Department of Health is lower than the JHU number.

According to JHU, Michigan led the nation with 6,149 new cases, followed by New York with 6,041, Florida with 5,556, Pennsylvania with 4,722 and Texas with 4,362.

In cases per 100,000 residents, Michigan was the top state with 61.5, followed by Minnesota with 53.4, New Jersey with 41.7, Pennsylvania with 36.8 and Rhode Island with 35.4, according to JHU.

The new cases reported by the health department increased the total number of cases statewide to 1,054,298 since the beginning of the pandemic.

In the county, 52 new cases raise the total to 9,956, and one new death brought the total to 389 since the pandemic began.

Butler Memorial Hospital is treating 16 COVID-19 patients, including five in the intensive care unit.

The 48 new deaths across the state bring the total to 25,285, including 12,964 residents of nursing or personal care facilities.

There are 2,384 people hospitalized with COVID-19, including 446 people in intensive care. The 14-day average number of people hospitalized per day is about 4,100 lower than it was at the peak in December 2020 and lower than what it was at the height of the spring peak in May 2020. However, the moving average of number of hospitalized patients has started to increase.

In licensed nursing and personal care homes, 69,611 residents and 14,381 employees have COVID-19.

The department also said a total of 5,797,589 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered, including 3,869,275 first and single doses and 1,928,314 second doses.

In the county, 18,659 people are partially vaccinated and 46,364 people are fully vaccinated.
