Jean Zarnick
Jean Zarnick passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2021, after a lengthy fight with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born Erma Jean Miller on Sept. 10, 1936, on a dairy farm in Somerset, Pa., she was one of 10 children to her parents, Ida (Knepper) and Milton Miller.
She graduated from Somerset High School in 1955. She attended nursing school at Butler Memorial Hospital, and became a registered nurse. This is where she met the love of her life, Tom Zarnick. They were married Jan. 30, 1960. Tom and Jean had three sons, Tom Jr., Jeff and Steve.
Tom and Jean were members of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Butler, where Tom sang in the choir, and Jean was active in the making of rosaries, rosary readings and funeral luncheons.
Jean worked at Butler Memorial Hospital for 35 years in the labor and delivery room, and the nursery. She loved being a nurse and helped many families and friends, while delivering their babies. She was a great wife, mother, avid gardener and excellent cook and baker.
She was a member of the Hooch Gang, Butler Memorial Hospital Nurses Alumni and the Red Hatters.
Tom and Jean traveled extensively in their retirement years, and really enjoyed being snowbirds in Tucson, Ariz., every winter. There, they enjoyed hiking the Catalina Mountains among the beautiful Saguaro cactuses, and sitting by the pool, playing cards and golfing with their snowbird friends from across the country.
Jean is survived by her husband of 61 years, Tom; her sons, Tom Jr. (Debbie) of Cranberry Township, Jeff (Johanne) of New Market, Md., and Steve (Susan) of Seattle, Wash.; and five grandchildren, Tommy III, Court, Lindsey, Ethan and Konrad.
