Freeport girls win West region bowling crown
Freeport continued its run of success in postseason bowling by winning the PA Western Regional girls team championship Saturday at North Versailles.
The Yellowjackets defeated Greensburg Salem, 2-1, in the baker-game finals.
“After we won the first game, they bowled a 230 to win the second one handily,” Freeport coach Tom Livingston said. “We came up with some clutch shots to win the third one.”
Amber Cepec rolled a strike in the eighth frame of the deciding game. Mackensie Livingston followed with a spare in the ninth and Julia Cummings struck out in the 10th to give Freeport the title.
Butler's girls placed fourth, 28 pins behind Freeport. Lauren Bash led the Golden Tornado with a 207 game and 526 series. Kelsee McConnell had a 511 series.
Only the top three teams advance to the state tourney.
Cummings tied Burrell's Lydia Flanagan for the regional's high game with a 237. She rolled a 571 series to join Livingston, who rolled a 569, on the all-tournament team.
The Pennsylvania state boys and girls singles tournament is Friday at North Versailles. The team event is Saturday.
Freeport's Mark Livingston won the Western Regional boys singles title a week ago and rolled a 299 during team competition.
“The postseason has been pretty exciting for us this vear,” Coach Livingston said. “A lot of success.”
Emma Ruhlman sank three free throws with no time on the clock, giving Warren a 40-39 victory over Slippery Rock in the District 10, Class 5A championship game.The Rockets (16-4) missed the front end of a one-and-one with 5.7 seconds left. They were then called for a foul on Ruhlman as she tossed up a desperation 3-point shot at the buzzer.Anna Kadlubek scored 21 points and Bronwyn McCoy added 11 for Slippery Rock. North Catholic sophomore diver Maggie Foley was runner-up at the PIAA Class 2A girls championship meet, held Saturday at Cumberland Valley High School.Foley, who won her second straight WPIAL title last month, finished with a score of 397.25.Marple Newtown's Alexandra Pastris entered the meet ranked first in the state and won the championship with an effort of 412.10.
