Butler bowler McConnell in state tourney

Butler freshman Kelsee McConnell was one of eight bowlers to qualify for the high school state championships during the Western PA Regional Singles Championships Friday in North Versailles.

The state championships will be held next week in Pittsburgh.

McConnell reached the semifinals of the regional, defeating Aubrey Stewart of Cranberry (Venango County) 191-170 in the quarterfinals. She fell to eventual champion Lydia Flanagan of Burrell 204-189 in the semifinals.

McConnell's five-game series was 930 with games of 178, 193, 185, 154 and 220.

Flanagan of Burrell won the regional singles title by defeating Mara Pilyih of Plum in the finals, 194-124.

Other state qualifiers from the West regional were Skyy Nichols of East Allegheny, Stewart, Delaney Whitehead of Meadville, Emmy Veycheck of Penn-Trafford and Alana Stecker of Plum.

Stecker had the regional's high game of 276.

The girls team regional is scheduled for Saturday at North Versailles.

Wrestling

Knoch senior Eli Reese placed fifth at 215 pounds at the PIAA Class AA Championships. He scored a 4-2 decision over Dante Mahaffey of Saucon Valley in overtime of their fifth-sixth place match.

Reese was pinned by No. 1 seed Dylan Bennett of Montoursville in the opening round, then scored a 3-2 decision over Parker Moore of Philipsburg-Osceola before dropping a 6-1 decision to Nate Wickersham of Tamaqua.

The Class AAA tourney takes place Saturday.

Girls Basketball

Dominika Logue scored 14 points, but Union's girls basketball team ended its season Thursday night with a 60-38 District 9 playoff loss at Otto-Eldred.

The Damsels fell behind by 13 at halftime and trailed by 24 entering the final quarter.

Katie Sheeler scored 24 points and Kayley Heller 20 for Otto-Eldred. The duo combined to sink nine treys.
