North stuns top seed
Max Rottmann certainly has a flare for the dramatic.
The North Catholic sophomore hadn't scored a point through the first three quarters in the Trojans' showdown with Belle Vernon in the WPIAL Class 4A semifinals.
But in the fourth quarter, Rottmann was unstoppable.
The guard came off the bench to hit four 3-pointers in the period, including the game-winner with 3.8 second left, as North Catholic knocked off the No. 1 seed Leopards 77-76 Thursday night to reach the WPIAL final.
Rottmann's 3-pointer earlier in the fourth quarter gave North Catholic its first lead of the game at 61-58.
Belle Vernon (13-2), though, went ahead again and didn't trail until Rottmann's dramatic shot in the waning seconds.
Andrew Ammerman scored 21 points to lead the Trojans.
Connor Maddalon added 17 and Matt Gregor 10.
Freshman Quinton Martin scored 27 points and also had 11 rebounds for Belle Vernon.
North Catholic (18-4) will play Lincoln Park (18-5) for the WPIAL title at 8 p.m. Monday at North Allegheny High School.
Lincoln Park knocked off Montour, 65-62, in the other Class 4A semifinal Thursday to reach the championship game.
The Trojans beat Lincoln Park 65-56 last year for the WPIAL title.
