Butler County's great daily newspaper

Student-driven Soar takes flight

Tucked inside Friday's Butler Eagle will be the first issue of Soar: Imagination Takes Flight, a student-driven publication.

With the collaboration of area school districts and nonpublic schools, the Butler Eagle will publish Soar, which will give voice to thoughts, dreams and creations of students in Butler County.

The first 12-page issue focuses on kindness and includes a Class Call, in which teachers from Seneca Valley, Freeport and Butler share students' activities and thoughts. Each week will offer more classes the opportunity to take on themes, such as respect, attitude and joy.

A glimpse into classrooms that have been hidden from view since March 2020 because of the pandemic is a reaffirmation of the future.

In Student Snapshots, children in kindergarten through 12th grade share what they like about school, who their heroes are and what they want to be when they grow up.

Other features like Poetry Place offer students a chance to see the power of their pens as excerpts of their stories are published for a wider audience to enjoy. In All About Art, the talents of those using ink and paint will let readers see the world through the students' eyes.

Soar also is a place where students can learn the importance of a community newspaper. It is a place to share their thoughts on issues that affect them and their actions, such as helping the community through food drives and other projects.

The student newspaper will be published weekly during the school year and monthly during the summer.
