Dylan Chappell of Seneca Valley takes control of Mars' Brandon Krul in their 132-pound match during the section team championships Monday night. Chappell won by pin and the Raiders defeated the Planets and North Allegheny to win the section crown.
SV wrestlers win 4th consecutive section team title

JACKSON TWP — Antonio Amelio was on both sides of near-takedowns during regulation.

He was on the winning side in overtime.

Seneca Valley's senior 160-pounder scored an escape in double overtime, then held off North Allegheny's Collin McCorkle for the final 30 seconds, in claiming a 2-1 win Monday night.

The victory helped the host Raiders claim a 36-27 triumph over the Tigers and a fourth straight section championship.

Both teams advance to Wednesday night, which will feature WPIAL quarterfinal and semifinal rounds at a site to be determined.

“Anytime you get a bout go into overtime, it's tough,” said Raiders' coach Kevin Wildrick. “And when it comes in a match where there's a section championship on the line, it just adds to the pressure.”

McCorkle scored first with an escape in the second period, which ended with Amelio nearly getting credit for a takedown.

The latter tied the score with an escape of his own just seconds into the third before he narrowly avoided being taken down himself in the last few seconds.

Neither wrestler was able to score in the first overtime, when the first one to score would have been awarded the win.

“I still wanted to be on the attack and get to my shots, but be a little cautious at the same time,” said Amelio. “I didn't want to take any unnecessary chances because I was confident I could win in double overtime.

“I'll probably wrestle him again at the individual section tournament. Hopefully, I'll be able to create more of a gap (in score) on him the next time.”Amelio improved his record this season to 21-3 while picking up his 121st career win. He wrestled at 145 pounds the last two seasons, placing third in the WPIAL last year.“We have a tough lineup, but Amelio is a tough kid,” said Wildrick. “He's done a good job of adjusting to a higher weight class.”Amelio was fine with the change.“I can eat normally now, not worry about making weight ... just go out and wrestle.”Amelio's win did not clinch the team win. It pushed SV's lead to 30-18 with three bouts left. Two bouts later, Liam Volk-Klos iced the championship with a pin of Brandon Weaver at 189 pounds. Also tallying pins for SV against the Tigers were Connor Smith, Tyler Chappel, Dylan Chappell, Alejandro Herrera-Rondon.Seneca Valley and North Allegheny both arrived to the championship match after crushing semifinal opponents earlier in the evening.
