Herrera-Rondon top wrestler at Powerade tourney
Seneca Valley senior Alejandro Herrera-Rondon won the 152-pound weight division and was named outstanding wrestler Saturday at the 54th annual Powerade Tournament in Monroeville.
The prestigious event featured 55 teams and 151 wrestlers who competed in high school state tournaments in either Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, West Virginia or Virginia last year.
Herrera-Rondon decisioned Rocco Welsh of Waynesburg, 9-4, in the 152-pound title match. Raiders finishing second in their respective weight classes were Tyler Chappell at 106 pounds, Dylan Chappell at 132 and Chanz Shearer at 145.
Hunter Swedish reached the semifinals at 120 pounds. Antonio Amelio at 160 and Liam Volk-Klos at 189 got to the quarterfinals. Seneca Valley tallied 178 points and took third place as a team.
Malvern Prep won the team championship.
Zach Schlegel scored 15 points to lead Mars past previously unbeaten South Allegheny, 48-46.The Planets (7-1) have won four straight games and host North Hills Tuesday.
