Salvation Army unit gets new leaders

PITTSBURGH — The Salvation Army Western Pennsylvania division welcomed its new leaders, Majors Gregory and Joyce Hartshorn.

The Hartshorns recently served as the divisional leaders of The Salvation Army Southern New England.

Gregory Hartshorn has served as second-in-command in the cities of Hartford, Conn.; Cleveland, Ohio; and Boston, Mass. Joyce Hartshorn has served alongside him, fulfilling many leadership roles in each of these communities since 2010.

Gregory Hartshorn spent his early years before a call to ministry as a small-business owner in Manchester, N.H. Joyce Hartshorn has a degree in sociology from The King’s College in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., and was serving at the local Salvation Army as a caseworker when the couple met.

They replace Majors Raphael and Sandra Jackson, who led the Western Pennsylvania Division for the past two and a half years.

Raphael Jackson has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel and will serve as the assistant chief secretary and racial diversity and inclusion secretary at the Salvation Army’s territorial headquarters. Sandra Jackson, also promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel, will serve as secretary for programs at the territorial headquarters.

The 28-county Western Pennsylvania Division serves thousands of needy families through a wide variety of support services.
