Butler Twp. recycled 25 tons in 2020

BUTLER TWP — Township residents recycled more than 18,000 pounds of household hazardous waste and electronics in the fourth quarter of last year and, in 2020, more than 25 tons altogether.

Recycling reports from Waste Management, the township's garbage and recycling contractor, containing the quarter and year-end numbers were reviewed at Monday's commissioners' meeting by Tom Knights, township manager.

Highlights from the quarterly report show residents recycled 2,276 pounds of latex paint, 634 pounds of oil-based paint, 595 pounds of used motor oil, 590 pounds of computers, 586 pounds of computer monitors, 448 pounds of printers, 10,020 pounds of TVs and 1,765 pounds of other electronics.

According to the annual report, residents recycled a total of 2.9 tons of latex paint, 1.02 tons of oil paint, 0.95 tons of computers, 0.69 tons of monitors, 0.55 tons of printers, 16.72 tons of TVs and 2.24 tons of other electronics.

In other business, the commissioners reappointed Tom Holman to a three-year term on the zoning hearing board.

“Butler Township is big on recycling,” said Dave Zarnick, commissioners chairman. “Hats off to our residents.”

In addition, surveying and lot clearing has begun for a recreation facility the township plans to build on 18 acres purchased last year at the Pullman Center Business Park.

Township workers are clearing vegetation as weather permits. A survey to locate rights of way and undergound utilities was scheduled to begin Monday, Knight said. Workers are finding a lot of old concrete foundations on the property, he said.

The park was once home to the Pullman-Standard Car Co. that built railroad cars in a plant there.

The township has applied to the Department of Transportation's Multimodal Transportation Fund for $2.8 million to realign the intersection of Whitestown Road, Hansen Avenue and Armco Drive, in order to improve access to the site.
