UPMC workers get 2nd vaccine

Charmaine Pykosh, a critical care practitioner in the COVID-19 unit at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, signals to observers Monday that she is receiving her second coronavirus vaccine dose at UPMC Children's Hospital.

Ten UPMC front-line employees who received their first dose of the Pfizer- BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine Dec. 14 were the first to receive their second dose Monday at UPMC Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Charmaine Pykosh, a critical-care practitioner in the COVID-19 unit at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, was the first person in Pennsylvania to receive the vaccine when she had her initial shot last month.

The 67-year-old nurse held up two fingers to signify that her second shot completes the vaccine and that she now has 94% immunity to the new and potentially life-threatening virus.

Heather Majewski, a radiological technician who administers drive-up COVID-19 tests at UPMC's Southside Collection Center, clenched her fist in elation as she received her second injection Monday.UPMC registered nurse Kimberly Graves administered the most recent round of vaccines to the 10 employees.UPMC received and administered 975 doses of the vaccine Dec. 14 and Tuesday.
