Responders extricate driver from 1-car crash

Responders work on a one-car crash early Wednesday morning on Route 528 near Staff Road.

The roof of a car as well as its passenger and driver doors had to be ripped open Wednesday morning to free a man trapped inside.

The Unionville Volunteer Fire Company and Slippery Rock Fire Company responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash on Route 528 near Staff Road early Wednesday morning.

According to Nathan Wulff, deputy chief of the Unionville company, the car left the road for an unknown reason, causing the accident.

The driver is described as a white man in his 30s. He suffered minor to moderate injuries, and Slippery Rock Ambulance transported him to Butler Memorial Hospital.

Wulff said when the man's car veered off the road, it hit a tree on the driver-side door and came to a stop. Route 528 was closed for an hour as responders peeled back the car's roof and front doors.

“It was pretty involved extrication,” Wulff said. “The tree was right up against the driver-side door, so it was pretty tricky, but we made it work,”

Wulff said the driver was pinned between the door and the steering wheel.
