Families make sign line to honor CVE faculty, staff
ZELIENOPLE — East Beaver Street shimmered with signs and honks Tuesday afternoon after Connoquenessing Valley Elementary (CVE) families took to the sidewalks in gratitude.
A sign line organized by school parents formed around 3:15 p.m., just as school staff left the CVE building for winter break.
Like in other county districts, Seneca Valley students are learning remotely through Jan. 4.
Tuesday's event capped off many hours of planning and a day of giving back to CVE staff for their efforts to educate students during the pandemic.
“People just came out of the woodwork,” said Jamie Thompson, whose kids go to CVE. “That's what this community does.”
Going into Christmas week, Thompson and other CVE parents worked with local restaurants and businesses to provide CVE's 87 teachers, staff and administrators with a number of thank-yous, including coffee, lunch and gift cards to ShuBrew.
The Zelienople art space, Curio, designed some signs used by students in the sign line.Second-grader Lincoln Wilkerson and his fourth-grade sister, Hayden, said they joined the sign line for a very important reason: They wanted to show their teachers how much they miss them.“Because we care,” Lincoln said. “We like them.”Hayden said she misses seeing her friends. Not being in class with her teachers also makes it difficult to learn some lessons.Hayden isn't the only one who feels that way. Kensington Lefler is a kindergartner this year.“She misses the classroom,” said Kari Lefler, her mother. “She learns better in the classroom.”Siblings Cain, 6, and Carlin Hagosky, 8, also can't wait to get back to school. Carlin said she's looking forward to seeing her teachers' faces.Cain said he knows exactly what he's going to do when schools let students return to in-person learning.“I'm going to color and see my teachers and have a lot of fun,” Cain said.
