Santa visit popular in Adams Township

Adams Township welcomed Santa on Sunday night. Visitors were invited to stop by the municipal building to visit with the jolly old elf himself, drive through the park's light display and watch fireworks. Donations for The Lighthouse Foundation were also collected.

Adams Township welcomed Santa in a fireworks-studded outdoor Christmas celebration Sunday.

Township officials said Tuesday that about 500 vehicles and at least 1,000 visitors stopped by the municipal building Sunday night to see the township park's Christmas light display and visit with Santa.

“It was an amazing turn out,” said Russell Ford, supervisor chairman. “I was just literally overwhelmed.”

The event was an all-hands-on-deck situation, with township leaders working together to direct parking, organize fireworks and help Santa visit vehicles.

Children were invited to bring wish lists and letters to drop off in Santa's mailbox, which is situated outside of the municipal building entrance.

Many families also brought donations for The Lighthouse Foundation. The township has been holding a winter food drive for the Middlesex Township food bank for several weeks.

Haley Geyer, township parks and recreation director, said the first batch of donations was dropped off at The Lighthouse Foundation on Friday.

“It was over 400 pounds,” Geyer said. “I'd say we're probably going to be over that amount (again), just by how gracious everyone was on Sunday night.”

Ford said this was particularly nice to see when so many people are struggling financially during the pandemic.

“What a way to give back,” Ford said. “I didn't realize it would be that big.”

Although the first half of the Sunday fireworks show contended with fog, Ford said the second half went well. Residents are already asking about plans for next year, according to Ford.

“I think the most common comment I got as people were coming through the parking lot was, 'Thanks for doing this,'” said Darryl Brandon, supervisor.

The township's community park light display will be open for visitors through Jan. 15.
