Multicounty drug probe nets arrest

Jesse Eaton of Butler, charged with felony drug possession in Butler.

More than 800 stamp bags of suspected heroin/fentanyl along with drug-packaging materials, a handgun and about $1,800 were seized from a Butler apartment last week during a multicounty drug bust, authorities said.

The tenant, Jesse James Eaton, 25, already was in state police custody just after midnight Wednesday when law enforcement officers from Butler and Clarion counties executed a search warrant at his home on the 200 block of Franklin Street.

Hours earlier, state police had arrested Eaton for suspected drunken driving in Butler.

He was arraigned Wednesday on felony drug and gun charges stemming from the Thanksgiving eve warrant search by the state police vice unit and the Butler County and Clarion County drug task forces, authorities said.

Eaton remains in the Butler County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bond.

Police were tight-lipped about their investigation that led to the search warrant for Eaton's apartment. They said the action came after they received “complaints of drug activity” at the home.

Investigators, authorities said, subsequently “obtained information that narcotics were being distributed from that apartment.” That information was eventually used to obtain the warrant.

About 7 p.m. Tuesday, troopers arrested Eaton for suspicion of driving under the influence in the city. He was taken to the barracks in Butler Township.

At 12:04 a.m. Wednesday, state police vice officers along with narcotics officers from Butler and Clarion counties executed the warrant at the apartment, which was unoccupied.

Investigators declined to discuss the Clarion County Drug Task Force's involvement in the search. Authorities with the task force in Clarion were unavailable for comment Sunday.

The search, investigators said, turned up 17 “bricks” of suspected heroin/fentanyl. A “brick” is a common street term for a group of 50 glassine bags containing opiates, such as heroin or fentanyl.

The suspected drugs were found inside a paper bag in the refrigerator, investigators said.

Other alleged evidence found during the search, according to authorities, were three boxes of empty glassine bags and a .38-caliber handgun. The gun was under a pillow in the master bedroom.

Police noted in court documents that because of Eaton's criminal record, which includes a 2015 conviction for possession of prohibited offensive weapons, he is barred under state law from having firearms.

District Judge Kevin O'Donnell arraigned Eaton on felony charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and persons not to possess firearms, and misdemeanor charges of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

Eaton's preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 7. Online court records did not list an attorney for him.
