Butler County's great daily newspaper

Strange times indeed for runners' world

I don't have to remind anyone that these are strange times to live and run in.

Many of our favorite activities have been curtailed or cancelled —and for good reason. That includes some of our favorite Thanksgiving turkey trots.

The Butler County Family YMCA Turkey Trot was on pace to celebrate its 39th running on Nov. 2 when the COVID-19 pandemic and state mandated response forced organizers to cancel the in-person event. Instead, the Y is offering runners and walkers a virtual way to continue the tradition and support the community.

Although an in-person run was not possible this year, Christina Dreher, Development Specialist at the Butler Y, says that holding the virtual event helps us keep a good perspective on things and supports the YMCA's mission to give access to programs for families, children, seniors and veterans.

Dreher says that organizers based the Virtual Turkey Trot on their experience conducting the Virtual Butler Road Race this past June. Although participation in the virtual event will probably be only about one-third of the participation in a live event, she says that it has drawn participants from beyond the Butler area as far as New York since the virtual event can be completed anytime from now until Nov. 27 on any course of the participant's choosing.

“You could run in the snow on a hilly trail or pick a sunny day and do the miles on a track,” Christina says. “Just submit your time.”

There are no competitive awards in the virtual events, but results will be listed on the YMCA website.

Participants also have more choices in this year's virtual event. Like the in-person events of the past, kids may run a one-mile run for a discounted entry fee. Anyone can sign up for the traditional 5k distance or for a new 10k choice.

Christina says that the 10k has been a popular choice and that organizers would consider holding at least a virtual if not in-person 10k in future Turkey Trots.

It's not too late to sign up for this year's Butler YMCA Virtual Turkey Trot. Visit www.bcfymca.org, call 724-287-4733 or sign up in person at the Butler location or the Rose M. Schneider YMCA in Cranberry Township.

And look for Butler Road Race's return next June. Christina Dreher says: “We're carefully optimistic about bringing back our beloved race to promote a healthy lifestyle in the community.”

If you prefer an in-person Thanksgiving run, check out Lawrence County YMCA's Turkey Trot 5k Run & Walk beginning at New Castle YMCA downtown. The decades-old event has had to make modifications to comply with state safety mandates. As Michelle Swogger, Community Outreach Director for Lawrence County YMCA says, “We're holding this event for the community's mental health. It's a small point of happiness in an emotionally dark time.”

The decades-old event adheres to social distancing and mask restrictions. Participants and spectators not feeling well or having a fever are asked not to attend. Those in attendance are requested to social distance and wear masks unless they are running. Post-race refreshments will be provided in individually wrapped packages.

There will be day of race sign up beginning at 8 a.m. The 5k course is a fairly level double loop with two wave starts. Any crossing roads will be closed and patrolled by local police. Walkers, wheelchairs, strollers and leashed dogs are welcome for this family-friendly event.

There will be no awards ceremony following the race. Overall and age group awards may be picked up at Shenango or Lawrence County YMCAs. Those from locations farther away (such as Butler) can receive awards by mail.

To sign up for Nov. 26 TDay 5k Run and Walk, visit www.lawcoymca.org/events/tday-5k-run-walk-0 or call the YMCA at 724-658-4766.
