Falling trees startle Winfield home owners

Two huge trees blew down onto Sarver Road in Winfield Township on Sunday afternoon, shearing off a utility pole and downing wires, and causing apparent minor damage to the home of Frank and Rosan Harbovsky. Electrical service was lost at homes in the area. The storm brought trees and power lines down throughout the county.

WINFIELD TWP — Rosan Harbovsky was in the bathroom putting on makeup. Husband Frank Harbovsky was in the living room watching the Tampa Bay-Carolina football game.

It was an ordinary fall Sunday afternoon at the couple's ranch-style house on the 800 block of Sarver Road in Winfield Township. Then, in a heart-pounding instant, it wasn't.

“I heard this crash and the whole house shook,” Rosan said. “I was scared. I thought the house was falling down.”

She didn't know what to do. “So I grabbed the wall,” she remembered.

And she screamed for Frank.

“I heard the cracking,” he said. “Then I looked out and saw the wires down and the trees down.”

Strong winds had uprooted two mammoth trees — possibly 100-footers — from woods across the road shortly after 3 p.m. The trees, both dead, had fallen onto power lines, shearing off a utility pole and knocking down wires — electrical, telephone and cable.

The trees, about 3 feet wide at the base, crashed onto the road, blocking both lanes. Some of the fallen timber also had struck the Harbovsky house. No one was injured.Luckily, it appeared the damage to the home with vinyl siding was minimal.Electrical and other service were lost to homes in the area, putting an end to Frank's football watching for the day.“Up until then,” he said, “it was a pretty good game.”Once Rosan composed herself, she walked to the front door to get a look for herself.“I said, 'Holy (expletive). Are you kidding me?'”She had long been concerned that the dead wood in the form of hefty trees across the road would eventually come down, possibly onto the house where she and Frank have lived since 2002.The couple believes the nearby Tarentum District Sportsmen's Club owns the property, but they're not certain. Buffalo Township volunteer firefighters aren't sure, either. The fire department responded quickly to the call. Crews inspected the damage, shut off the main breaker to the home and deployed an infrared camera to check for any unseen fire within the walls of the house. None was found.“I guess I should probably call my insurance company,” Rosan also wondered out loud.Authorities also notified West Penn Power and other utility companies. Firefighters closed Sarver Road between Cruikshank and Monroe roads and Kepple and Leasureville roads.Winfield Township supervisors were later notified about the road closure.
