Crash leaves hundreds without power, causes school delays
An early morning crash Thursday left hundreds without power and caused a delay for Evans City Elementary School and Evans City Middle School.
At around 3 a.m., a vehicle crashed into a utility pole on the 200 block of West Main Street in Evan City.
The accident involved a single vehicle crashing into a pole that had electric and phone lines on it, according to Evans City Fire Chief Matt Otto.
The driver sustained minor injuries with bumps and bruises and he refused medical attention, Otto said. The car uprooted the whole pole, requiring traffic to be closed down to one lane, he said.
According to FirstEnergy, nearly 500 residents were left without power following the crash — 194 in Evans City Borough and 283 in Jackson Township.
FirstEnergy restored power to customers at 7:15 a.m. Thursday and the accident caused many spans of wire to be taken down, requiring time consuming repairs, according to an energy spokesman.
The crash occurred near the Evans City Elementary School, affecting both the elementary school and middle school. Seneca Valley School District announced Thursday morning that both schools were operating on a two-hour delay.
Otto said crews cleared the accident scene around 6:40 a.m., and after that the power company, Penn Power, arrived to restore power to the area.
“It was a routine call for us and nobody got hurt, which is the most important thing for us,” Otto said.
