Butler man revived with Narcan faces DUI charge

Garrett Barnes
Driver allegedly found slumped over in car

Butler police arrested a man after he allegedly overdosed on heroin while driving in the city Monday afternoon.

Police said emergency crews had to revive Garrett S. Barnes, 34, of Butler with Narcan. Allegedly found in his hand was a syringe and on his lap and on the driver's side floor were empty stamp bags of suspected heroin.

He admitted, police said, that he had used two bags of heroin before allegedly overdosing. Barnes, who has two prior DUI convictions, was arraigned on charges of driving under the influence of a controlled substance, and placed in the Butler County Prison on $5,000 bond.

Police said they were called around 2:30 p.m. to the intersection of West Pearl and North Washington streets, where a woman reported hearing the sound of a vehicle horn and then seeing a man, later identified as Barnes, slumped over in the driver's seat of a sport utility vehicle.

She said she went to the SUV and found the front passenger window was down. The woman reached into the SUV, unlocked the door, shifted the vehicle into park and turned off the key in the ignition, police said.

The Butler City Fire Department and Butler Ambulance Service were called and crews administered Narcan to Barnes, which revived him. Police said they found a syringe in his hand.

Additionally, police recovered another syringe in the passenger door pocket, a bag of unused syringes on the passenger floorboard and the empty stamp bags.

Crews administered oxygen to Barnes before he was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital, and subsequently consented to a blood draw, police said. Toxicology results are pending. Police noted in charging the defendant that he has prior DUI convictions in 2011 and 2012.
