Water main break affects 130
A water main break Saturday morning at the intersection of Mercer Street and Maryland Avenue in Butler left more than 100 homes without water.
Gary Lobaugh, Pennsylvania American Water spokesman, said the six-inch pipe broke at about 8:30 a.m., creating a hole in the street and a stream of gushing water.
He said the cast iron pipe is more than 70 years old and was scheduled for replacement in a $3.2 million upgrade that began in October.
Crews arrived on the scene and began working to repair the pipe. Lobaugh said the work was to be finished by late Saturday.
He said 130 customers had low or no pressure as a result of the break, but regular water service would return when the pipe repair was completed.
Because there was no loss of pressure in the main line, the customers affected by the break were not advised to boil their water once it returned, Lobaugh said.
“That main will be replaced within the next few weeks,” he said.
