NC WPIAL volleyball champ

North Catholic's girls volleyball team cruised to its second WPIAL Class 2A championship in three years Saturday, defeating Ellwood City, 3-1.

Game scores were 25-13, 25-12, 21-25, 25-11.

The Trojanettes handed Ellwood City its first loss of the season while staying unbeaten themselves. In dropping the third set, North Catholic lost its first game since a season-opening 3-2 victory over Seneca Valley.

North Catholic will host the winner of Tuesday's Redbank Valley-Chestnut Ridge match Saturday in the PIAA Tournament.

Butler's C.J. Singleton, Seneca Valley's Noah Peterson and Knoch's Mike Formica all medaled at the PIAA Championships Saturday in Hershey.Singleton placed sixth in the boys Class AAA race with a time of 16 minutes, 29 seconds. He was 22 seconds behind champion Brady Bigger of State College. Peterson finished 14th in 16:46.Formica placed 11th in the boys AA race with a time of 17:16.On the girls side, North Catholic's Grace Lazzara was 30th in 21:17. The Trojanettes finished third as a team with 117 points.In girls Class A, Moniteau's Hannah Burgoon was 37th in 22:07, the Warriors' Jenna Blauser 44th in 22:20.

Knoch's Brooke and Aly Bauer finished second in the PIAA Class 2A doubles tournament, losing 6-4, 6-2 to Emma Perkins and Alex Pancu of Conrad Weiser in the championship match.The Bauer sisters defeated Madeline DeFaber-Schumaker and Bella Aniske of Riverside 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals.Knoch's Laura Greb was defeated 6-2, 6-2 by eventual 2A singles champion Olivia Dorner of South Williamsport in the semifinals. Greb rebounded to take third place by defeating Chessie Bartolucci of Moravian Academy 6-0, 6-2 in the consolation final.
