County COVID death total now at 31

State reports highest spike of cases

Butler County reported one new COVID-related death Thursday as its cases continue trending upward and the state records another all-time high.

Butler County's one new death Thursday came after two were attributed to the county on Wednesday.

According to daily reports from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the county added 17 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Thursday and 25 on Friday. The county has had 1,685 residents test positive since the beginning of the pandemic, and 31 residents have died.

Both Thursday's and Friday's additions fall within reach of the county's average of 21 new daily cases over the past month.

The county's recent resurgence of the virus has mirrored that of the state and country.

Pennsylvania saw its largest single-day increase of new COVID-19 positives Friday with 3,384. The new high marked three record days this week, which also included Tuesday with 2,875 new positives and Thursday with 2,900.

The state also reported that about 1,599 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 symptoms with 351 of those inpatients being treated in intensive care units.

On Friday, Butler Health System officially reported one new death and four more hospitalized patients at Butler Memorial Hospital. One COVID-19 patient died Thursday, following two COVID-19 deaths reported Wednesday.

Butler Memorial's inpatient numbers now stand at 22, with four of those exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms but still awaiting test results. The remaining 18 have confirmed cases of the virus, and six are in the intensive care unit.

While Butler County's new case numbers appear to hover in the high-teens and low-20s, neighboring Westmoreland County has added 2,998 cases since the beginning of September.

In a news release Friday, Levine said Westmoreland's increase “gives us significant cause for concern,” as the opening of a new drive-thru and indoor testing clinic was announced.

Levine is expected to conduct a news conference Monday with more updates on the ongoing pandemic.
