Redevelopment authority fixing apartment building
The Butler Redevelopment Authority hired a contractor Thursday to repair a crumbling parapet on one of its rental properties.
Bricks and mortar from a decorative parapet on a six-unit apartment building at 330 Virginia Avenue have been falling onto the porch and street, said Veronica Walker, acting authority executive director.
Authority board members unanimously voted to hire Young Masonry of Butler to make the repairs for $4,000. Work is expected to begin Aug. 20.
Young Masonry submitted the lowest of three bids for the work. The other bids were $10,000 and $14,890, Walker said.
In unrelated business, Mayor Ben Smith offered the authority four unused benches that the authority could place at some of its properties. He said people getting take-out orders from downtown restaurants could use the benches for seating.
Smith said the benches have to be placed on a solid surface and suggested the authority have a cement pad made at the former Wishing Well card store site at 150 S. Main St. and put the benches there.
Art Cordwell, authority rehabilitation inspector, suggested placing two of the benches near the SpringHill Suites on East Jefferson Street.
Fred Reese, authority chairman, suggested placing two at the Main Street lot and two near the hotel. He thanked Smith for the offer and said the authority would look into it.
