North Catholic’s Jack Steineman wins HOKA Showcase, Karns City boys soccer wins in rout: Highlights & scores
Jack Steineman started his junior season with a win at the HOKA Night Cross Country Showcase at SPIRE Academy, in Ohio, on Saturday, racing to a nearly 3-second win in the boys high school race.
From North Catholic, Steineman’s 15:27.15 beat Norwin’s Benjamin McBride (15:30) and a field that included Butler, Knoch, Mars and Seneca Valley.
The Knights’ Carter French was the next-fastest local runner, crossing in 16:03.41 for 14th, and Tornado senior Brendan Eicher ran a 16:08.35 for 19th.
On the girls side, Mars’ Hailey Long finished fifth in 18:26.37 to top all local runners; the top four runners were from Ohio. Teammate Norah Sondej also cracked the top 50, running a 19:49.74 for 39th.
Others making the top 100 in the boys high school showcase was Butler’s Landon Slear (17:07.41, 83rd), Knoch’s Connor McCool (17:06.57, 82nd), Seneca Valley’s Hunter Petersen (17:04.80, 80th), and Mars’ Evan Lewis (16:43.21, 52nd), Grady Knauf (16:55.47, 70th) and Scott Kelly (17:11.62, 91st);
Top 100 finishers for the girls included Butler’s Zari Golojuh (20:12.97, 58th) and Avery Sintz (20:49.10, 93rd) and Seneca Valley’s Paige Damico (20:51.27, 96th).
Norwin won the girls team standings with 136 points, while the boys won with 92. Mars fielded the top local girls team, coming in 18th (520 points), and boys team, which finished 13th with 483.
Karns City 8, West Middlesex 0 — Logan Rumbaugh recorded one of the first hat tricks of the young PIAA season in Saturday’s blowout win for the Gremlins. Marcos Chopen added two, and Trevor Rumbaugh, Xavier Bartoe and Ty McFarland also scored.
Brock Dittman and Rumbaugh combined for three saves in net.
Freeport 2, Penn Hills 2 — Xavier DeWitt and Spencer Valasek each scored in the Yellowjackets’ season opener Saturday, while Carson Rowley had an assist on one of those goals.
Seneca Valley 2, Kiski School 1 — Max Gochis and Fynn O’Donnell each scored for the Raiders in Sunday’s win at the Pine-Richland Invitational.
That came one day after the Raiders romped Archbishop Ryan 6-0 on two goals from Trey Houser and a clean sheat in goal from Kyle DeMaster. Connor Mackrell, Jacob Prex, Donovan Miller and Zach White all scored one goal.
Mars 1, Hopewell 1 — The Planets start the year 0-0-2 after also tying Taylor Allderdice 0-0, when Collin McAfee had some “clutch stops,” according to the team’s postgame report. No stats were reported from Sunday’s tie with Hopewell
North Catholic 3, Kiski Area 0 — Matthew Liscinski scored and dished out an assist while Logan Mueser pitched a shutout in net Saturday for the Trojans to start the year 2-0. Jake Olkowski and Jackson Schlegel scored, and Shane Schollaert recorded two assists.
Karns City 5, Apollo-Ridge 2 — The Gremlins rebounded from Friday’s season-opening loss with a blowout victory Saturday thanks to two goals apiece from Carleigh Lucas and Phoebe Brandon. Lucas also added an assist, and Bree O’Donnell scored the last goal.
Mars 5, Kiski Area 1 — Mackenzie Powell scored two goals and dished out a pair of assists in the Fightin’ Planets’ rout to kick off the season Saturday. Jade Breese (one assist), HB Wolski and Miley Gratton (one assist) also scored.
Freeport 1, Thomas Jefferson 0 — Ella McConville connected with Gabriella Pavlina, and Sophia Crawford didn’t allow a goal in the Yellowjackets’ season-opening win Saturday.
