More hospitalizations expected due to spike
Butler County added three new coronavirus cases Monday after adding eight over the weekend.
According to Monday's report by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the additions from the last three days have brought the county's total of confirmed COVID-19 cases to 441.
The county's death toll remains at 13. The last fatality of Butler County's bout with the pandemic was June 14.
Statewide, three new deaths were attributed to COVID-19 in Monday's report.
Department of Health spokesman Nate Wardle said experts expect that hospitalizations will increase one to two weeks after a spike in cases. He said a spike in deaths could occur about three weeks after a spike in new cases.
“We also know that a number of our recent cases have been in younger demographics, and even though they may get very sick, are less likely to die from the virus,” Wardle said.
According to a report Monday by Butler Health System, Butler Memorial Hospital is treating seven patients, three with suspected cases of COVID-19 and four with confirmed cases of the virus. Three of the seven patients are being treated in the intensive care unit.
Hospitalizations at Butler have increased in the past week. On Wednesday, the hospital reported three patients, one of whom was an ICU patient.
Wardle said the results of the latest surge have yet to be seen, but health officials are better prepared now than at the beginning of the outbreak.
“Since the first weeks of the pandemic, we hope some of the lessons learned and put into place will also help reduce the number of COVID-19 deaths from this wave of cases across the state,” he said.
