Leadership team delays dock project

Drawing for kayak available

Leadership Butler County postponed the installation of an ADA accessible boat dock and launch at Lake Arthur in Moraine Sate Park and one of the fundraisers for the project, but is moving ahead with an Aug. 3 benefit drawing for a $3,000 kayak package.

The dock, which is the class project of Leadership Butler County's Class of 2020, was originally supposed to be installed July 11, but was postponed to July 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. An exact date has not yet been set.

A murder-mystery dinner fundraiser originally planned for May 9 this year was canceled and has been rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. May 15, 2021, at The Atrium in Prospect.

Michele Konyha, class president and a payroll and human resource specialist at Butler County Community College, said the class can now be referred to as the Class of 2020-21 because the dock will be installed in 2021.

The group's goal is to raise $50,000 for the EZ Dock and EZ Launch System and to pave handicapped parking spaces along Pleasant Valley Road on the South Shore of the lake.

People who bought tickets for the murder-mystery dinner this year can get a refund by contacting the Butler County Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the leadership program with BC3 and Slippery Rock University. Those tickets will be honored at the dinner next year, and additional tickets will go on sale next year. Tickets cost $40.

Tickets are still available for the fundraising drawing, which is going to be livestreamed on Leadership's Facebook page at noon Aug. 3 from the site where the dock will be installed. Tickets cost $20 and can be purchased by contacting the chamber.

The drawing is for a Necky Kayak 130R, life vest, paddle, Yeti cooler, 80-quart wheeled Pelican cooler, Member's Mark portable gas grill, Lifetime tailgate table, and AdventureRidge folding table and stool set.

Leadership class members and park officials will speak before the drawing, and a disabled military veteran will draw the winning ticket.

Anyone with disabilities will be able to use the dock, but Konyha said she has a soft spot for veterans. Her son, Stephen, is in the Army Reserves and served a tour in Iraq last year, her father served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, her sister served in the Army, and her brother-in-law is in the service.

“We kind of focus on veterans. Nature is natural medication,” Konyha said. “Why shouldn't people that have a disability enjoy nature like you and I can.”
