Kids' Weekend Backpack Program gets donations

Volunteers load food destined for the Kids' Weekend Backpack Program at the Butler Area School District.

Residents donated food to stock the Kids’ Weekend Backpack Program at the Butler Area School District for the 2020-21 school year through the annual Stuff-A-Bus event.

Donations were made by emailing or calling Sam’s Club or Walmart in Butler Township to place orders for food for the program July 8. People shopping could donate by purchasing items and taking them to the service desks.

The program, funded through donations only, assists students in kindergarten through fourth-grade who have limited weekend food supplies at home.

The Stuff-A-Bus event was started by teacher and program committee member Meghan Lucas and is in its third year. COVID-19 restrictions prevented the organization from collecting donations in person at the stores.

Sam Zurzolo, township commissioner and committee vice president, volunteered his time and truck to deliver the donations to McQuistion Elementary School.

Monetary donations to the program can be sent to the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation, c/o Ellen Scott, 110 Campus Lane, Butler, PA 16001.

Checks should be made payable to the foundation, and KWBP should be written on the memo line.
