BlueSox stellar on hill
After a quick start and sudden finish to his collegiate baseball season, Andy McClymonds is back on the mound.
It's almost like he never left.
The Slippery Rock University right-hander made his first start of the year for the Butler BlueSox Monday night. He scattered six hits over seven innings in a 4-1 Tri-State Collegiate League baseball win over the Butler Iron Bucks at Michelle Krill Memorial Field at Pullman Park.
“Their hitters seemed behind on my fastball early,” McClymonds said. “I went to my curve and changeup in the later innings and that got me through.”
McClymonds struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
“I don't keep a pitch count on him,” BlueSox manager Dan Helgert said of McClymonds. “We communicate with each other. Andy and I have a good relationship that way. He wasn't exerting himself out there too much.”
The nine-inning game was played in just over two hours. Jackson Rogers and Sean Furlong added a scoreless inning each on the mound for the BlueSox.
McClymonds made three starts for SRU — winning them all — before the college season was shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. Monday marked his third outing this year for the BlueSox.
“These last couple ... I'm getting a feel for things again,” he said.
The BlueSox snapped a 1-1 tie by scoring single runs in the sixth and seventh innings — without tallying a hit in either frame.
Josh Johnson — who delivered a run-scoring double in the third — walked to begin the sixth. He moved to second on an errant pickoff attempt, to third and home on wild pitches.
Butler graduate Nate Stutz walked to begin the seventh. He moved to second on a ground ball, to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Nick Reynosa sacrifice fly.
Losing pitcher Dan Morgano allowed just four hits in six innings.
“I'd like to see us hit the ball better,” Helgert said. “We're hitting some balls hard, but right at people. We're still shaking some rust off.”
“Dan pitched a great game for us,” Iron Bucks manager Matt Morrone said. “He certainly pitched well enough to win.
“We're getting hits, but we're getting them with no one on base. We're not getting any clutch hits and you can't win that way.”
Butler graduate Dallas Hays had three singles in as many at bats for the Iron Bucks. He was thrown out trying to score from second with two outs in the eighth inning on a single to right by Ben Kosbie. Reynosa threw Hays out on a close play.
Kosbie had a triple and single for the Iron Bucks. Butler graduate Isaiah Lucas doubled and scored the Iron Bucks' run in the fourth inning.
The teams will play their next game at Pullman Park against each other at 7 p.m. Monday.
