Driver injured in rollover crash in Winfield Township

A wrecker hauls away a Jeep that crashed about 6 a.m. Thursday on Spiker Road in Winfield Township. The driver suffered lower body injuries, state police said, and he was flown to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh.

WINFIELD TWP — One person was injured and flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital Thursday morning after the sport utility vehicle he was driving crashed and rolled onto his legs on Spiker Road as he was apparently driving to work, authorities said.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, suffered lower body injuries in the crash near Marwood Road in Winfield Township just before 6 a.m., state police said. His condition was not available.

A trooper said the man was traveling south when his Jeep left the road and hit a tree stump that was about four feet off the road. The vehicle overturned onto its driver's side.

He was partially thrown out of the driver's side window when the SUV rolled over, police said. A passing motorist came upon the wreck and called 911. The driver was conscious when emergency crews arrived.

Police said the man works at nearby CRS Contracting on Spiker Road.

A STAT MedEvac helicopter landed on a field at the business, before flying the man to UPMC Presbyterian hospital.

Police are investigating the wreck but they did not immediately know what caused it. The road was wet at the time of the crash, police noted.

Herman and Saxonburg volunteer fire departments and Saxonburg Ambulance assisted at the scene. A wrecker towed away the Jeep, which had severe front-end damage.
