COVID-19 cases broken down by ZIP code

Map reveals hot spots in county

As Gov. Tom Wolf announces “data-driven” plans to reopen the state, the Department of Health continues to evolve its collection and publication of COVID-19 statistics.

In the state's Monday coronavirus update, Secretary of Health Rachel Levine said the Department of Health worked with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency to create a newly-released map breaking down COVID-19 cases by ZIP code. The map is available to the public on the Department of Health's website.

Levine stressed the information should not be used by individuals to justify disobeying the government's orders to stay at home.

She said there have been many cases the state knows about and many they don't know about where people who have the coronavirus exhibit minor or zero symptoms.

“What's important to remember about this information is if there are a lower number of confirmed cases in your ZIP code, it doesn't mean it is safe to resume normal activities, discontinue social distancing and go out without a mask,” Levine urged.

According to the map's data on Monday, the three areas of Butler County where positive cases were the highest were Butler's 16001 ZIP code with 43 cases, 24 cases in the Cranberry Township 16066 ZIP code and 12 in the Sarver area covered by the 16055 ZIP code.

Levine said tracking numbers at nursing homes has also been a priority for the state as they house a population that is particularly susceptible to serious symptoms of the coronavirus.

For more than a week now, the Department of Health has reported data regarding COVID-19 cases in nursing homes, but the information is not broken down into individual facilities and locations.

However, the federal government reported Monday it was escalating its data collection practices for these facilities, too.

Federal officials announced that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will be working on a way to release public information about COVID-19 data relevant to nursing homes.

Concordia at the Orchard in Butler is still recovering from a number of positive cases among its residents and employees, which included two residents who died from the virus.

Spokesman Frank Skrip said those who have the virus are continuing to recover, and they continue to see negative results come in for those they have tested.

Skrip said they have received notice that they will have to begin reporting data at a federal level, but no procedure has been solidified yet.

“We got a letter from CMMS that this new requirement will be put in place very soon,” Skrip said.

Skrip said Concordia will comply with whatever requirements will be needed once they receive additional guidance.

He said one area that is confusing for Concordia and possibly other facilities like it is the verbiage and guidelines set between nursing homes, personal care homes and retirement living facilities, which are all different.

He said Concordia at Cabot has all three of these facilities at that location, but its Orchard location in Butler is solely a personal care facility.

Skrip said the reporting will go to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through an online portal, but it hasn't been established when and which facilities this will affect.

“That memo came yesterday,” Skrip said. “We'll just wait and see.”

According to the Department of Health's Monday report, Butler County has three facilities, either nursing homes or personal care homes, that have been affected by the virus, totaling 10 cases among residents and nine cases among employees.

The following information was collected by using the newly-introduced ZIP code feature added Monday to the interactive map on the Pennsylvania Department of Health's website, www.health.pa.gov/topics/disease/coronavirus.The following ZIP codes are those in which confirmed cases of the coronavirus were reported.
