Team play holds off Blue Devils

PITTSBURGH — Devin Carney was being taken away.

And Mt. Lebanon was coming.

The Blue Devils opened the third quarter with a 9-0 run, trimming a 12-point halftime deficit to three, less than three minutes into the period.

Carney scored 21 points to lead the Golden Tornado in the first half of Saturday night's WPIAL Class 6A boys basketball championship game. He was held to three in the second half.

“I was able to drive to the basket and get myself open a lot more,” Carney said of the first half. “They switched up on me in the second half and it was tough to find room.

“It didn't matter. We have a lot of guys who can get things done. We're a true team. We count on each other.”

Raine Gratzmiller and Mattix Clement led that team aspect in the second half and played key roles in the Golden Tornado's 70-61 championship win.

Gratzmiller, a sophomore, scored four points, had four assists, three rebounds and a steal. Clement scored 12 of his 15 points in the final two quarters, including a trey from the right corner that ended Mt. Lebanon's 9-0 run.

“I knew (Mt. Lebanon coach) Joey (David) was going to come out with something different to begin the second half,” Butler coach Matt Clement said. “He's a great coach and he was going to adjust.”

Butler's answer? Get Gratzmiller in the game.

“We haven't had Luke Patten and I've said all along that Raine can do a lot of the stuff Luke did for us,” Clement said. “He did a lot of those things in the second half.”

Patten was a standout versatile starter for Butler his sophomore and junior years before losing his senior season to a knee injury. He received one of the loudest ovations in the Petersen Events Center when he received his championship medal after the game.

Gratzmiller's playing time has varied from game to game this season.

“Always gotta be ready,” he said. “Winning this game means so much to so many ... I had to do my part. The team and coaches have confidence in me and I've developed confidence in myself.”

Butler led 47-44 with 2:14 left in the third quarter. The Tornado went on a 12-3 run at that point, assuming a 59-47 lead with 6:07 to play and taking control of the game.

Gratzmiller hit a jumper in the paint and sank two free throws during that surge. Mattix Clement began the Tornado run with his second trey of the quarter.

“We figured they'd make a run at us,” Mattix said. “We just had to hold it together, keep making plays.”

Mason Montag stuck back an offensive rebound late in the third quarter to help hold off the Blue Devils. Mattix Clement stuck back an offensive board to give his team a 12-point lead midway through the final quarter.

“This team is filled with unsung heroes, guys doing scrappy things, grinding out plays to help us win,” senior guard Ethan Morton said. “That's what makes this so satisfying.

“We did it together.”
