4 county matmen in semis
CANONSBURG — Four Butler County wrestlers qualified for the semifinal round of the WPIAL Class AAA Championships Friday night at Canon-McMilla High School.
Seneca Valley's Dylan Chappell at 120 pounds, Alejandro Herrera-Rondon at 132 and Chanz Shearer at 138, along with Knoch's Guy DeLeonardis at 160, remain alive in the championship bracket.
The semifinals are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The finals and consolation finals are slated for 5 p.m.
Chappell (43-4) decisioned Luke Passarelli of Norwin 2-0 in the quarterfinal round. Hererra-Rondon (37-3) won by an 8-0 decision in the round of 16, then pinned Ben Eckenrode of Thomas Jefferson at 4:34 in the quarterfinals.
Chappell and Rondon are defending WPIAL champions.
Shearer (34-7) scored a 6-3 decision over Max Stedeford of North Allegheny to reach the quarters.
Knoch 160-pounder Guy DeLeonardis (22-1) reached the semifinals by scoring a 4-0 decision of Brendan Finnerty of Thomas Jefferson.
A number of county wrestlers were defeated in the quarterfinals, including defending WPIAL 145-pound champion Antonio Amelio of Seneca Valley. He dropped a 3-2 decision to Connellsville's Jared Keslar.
The Raiders' Tyler Chappell at 106, Hunter Swedish at 113, Drew Vlasnic at 152 and Liam Volk-Klos at 170 all got bumped into the consolation bracket with quarterfinal losses. Vlasnic lost a 3-2 decision to unbeaten Cole Spencer of Pine-Richland.
Butler 170-pounder Cooper Baxter and 195-pound Caleb Hartung lost decisively in the quarterfinal round. Baxter dropped a 20-6 decision to Mac Stout of Mt. Lebanon while Hartung lost by technical fall at 4:56 to Brayden Roscosky of Kiski Area.
Knoch heavyweight Eli Reese lost a 4-0 decision in the quarterfinals to William McChesney of Greensburg Salem.
Numerous wrestlers remain alive in consolations. The top four placers in each weight class advance to the PIAA Championships next weekend in Hershey.
