SR girls roll past Corry
FARRELL — The edge Slippery Rock's girls basketball team has played with for much of this season was apparent in spurts during Saturday's District 10 Class 5A quarterfinal playoff against Corry.
While Rockets' coach Amber Osborn knows her players will need a more consistent effort moving forward, the up-and-down performance proved enough to dispatch the Beavers.
Slippery Rock's 13-0 run to start the game was supplemented by a solid third quarter in which the Rockets forced 11 turnovers on their way to a 46-27 victory at Farrell High School's E.J. McCluskey Gymnasium.
“Sometimes it's tough when you get a big (lead) to keep that momentum going for an entire game,” said Osborn. “The gym was quiet today and there weren't many people here.”
Slippery Rock advances to Wednesday's semifinal round where it will face Harbor Creek, a 37-29 winner over Hickory, at a site and time to be determined.
The Rockets and Beavers entered the postseason from opposite directions. While Slippery Rock (17-6) won a region title and entered Saturday's action riding a 6-game winning streak, Corry had earned just two victories all season.
That disparity played out on the court in the opening quarter, after which the Rockets led 15-3 thanks in part to treys from Anna Kadlubek, Kelly Benson and Ella McDermott.
Play was much more even in the second period and the Rockets settled for a 25-14 lead at intermission.
“Once we got rid of the nerves, we played much better,” said Corry coach Meghan Sisson. “Slippery Rock is a very physical team and we had to match that and spread the ball around.”
The Rockets needed to reaffirm their control of the game and did so in the third quarter with a press defense. It helped the team take a 39-21 advantage into the final quarter.
“You have to know when you can and can't do that. There's a time and place for it,” said Osborn of turning up the heat defensively. “You always have to work on it and we keep it part of our gameplan.”
Tessa Graham led Corry (2-21) with 10 points. She was the lone upperclassman in the Beavers' starting lineup, which included three sophomores and a freshman.
Corry's top two players off the bench are sophomores.
The Beavers took advantage of the District 10 playoffs being an open tournament, meaning regardless of record, a team can opt to play.
“We had some injuries this season and we had to play a lot of young players,” said Sisson. “Some people wonder why we would play a playoff game.
“I wanted the players coming back next year to have this experience. It will be valuable when we are in a position to compete. We weren't going to opt out.”
Bronwyn McCoy scored 11 points for Slippery Rock and Kadlubek added 10.
