Student charged with hitting staffer
SUMMIT TWP — A student is accused of punching a staff member at the Summit Academy reform school.
State police arrested 18-year-old Kylar Cummings following the incident Friday night. He is being held in the Butler County Prison on felony assault and other charges.
Police were called around 9:15 p.m. to the facility on Herman Road in Summit Township, and found that the defendant allegedly punched the employee, a counselor, in the head, according to the investigation.
The victim suffered bruising to the head, police said. He did not need medical treatment, Summit Academy spokesman Dick Roberts said Wednesday. Roberts declined further comment.
On Saturday, District Judge Lewis Stoughton arraigned Cummings on a felony charge of aggravated assault, a misdemeanor charge of simple assault and a summary charge of harassment.
Under state law, anyone who causes or attempts to cause harm to certain protected workers — including an officer or employee of a juvenile detention center — can be charged with aggravated assault.
Cummings remains in the county prison on $30,000 bond while awaiting his preliminary hearing Tuesday at Stoughton's office in Chicora.
Summit Academy is a private, residential school for court-adjudicated delinquent and dependent boys and young men, ages 14 to 19.
