Redevelopment authority might charge pet fee
Tenants renting units subsidized by the Butler Redevelopment Authority might face a new monthly fee for their pet.
The authority board Thursday discussed charging a $25 monthly fee to include a dog, cat, bird or fish in a rental unit.
The fee would be in addition to a $100 pet security deposit charged to those tenants.
The security deposit and fees would pay to replace or clean carpet or make other repairs to damage caused by pets.
The new fee would affect 12 units, seven of which are occupied.
Veronica Walker, acting executive director and operations manager, said tenants will be given 30 days to review the prospective new policy, which will then be voted upon by the authority board.
Walker said not many tenants own pets.
She said under the current rules, tenants can have one cat or one dog, two birds, not including parrots, or fish. Reptiles and other exotic pets are not permitted.
The authority board members appeared to agree with the proposed $25 fee.
No action was taken on the policy at Thursday's meeting.
