Head-on collision leaves 3 severely hurt, hospitalized
BUTLER TWP — Three people were hospitalized after a head-on crash around 6:30 p.m. Thursday on the Route 68 bridge near Delwood Road.
Butler Township police said they believed one car was trying to pass a vehicle at a high speed in the westbound lane when it struck another car traveling east.
All three people, two in the westbound car and one in the eastbound car, were taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital with severe injuries.
Police said it was possible that all three people needed to be flown to Pittsburgh for treatment.
Both vehicles had heavy front-end damage, and both vehicles came to rest on their respective guard rails.
Township police said they called state police to help reconstruct the crash for further investigation.
Emergency crews blocked and diverted traffic at the bridge for at least two hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
The location of the crash prompted fire, police and EMS departments from both Butler city and township to be called.
