Raiders felled by NA

Karchut nets 21 in 62-37 setback

JACKSON TWP — Lizzy Groetsch and Maddie Karchut both had strong offensive games for North Allegheny and Seneca Valley, respectively, scoring 27 and 21 points.

Monday night's Section 1-6A girls basketball clash was decided by the supporting casts and that of the Tigers was much more potent.

Taylor Rawls and Jasmine Timmerson combined for 21 points for NA, while the Raiders' had no other player score more than five points as the Tigers won going away, 62-37 at William Paul Gymnasium.

“Other girls have to get involved on the offensive end. We've talked about that,” said SV coach Dorothea Epps. “They (Tigers) were able to get tight on our outside shooters because nobody else (other than Karchut) wanted to go inside.”

Karchut, a 6-foot-1 senior center/forward, scored all 10 of her team's points in the first quarter, after which the Tigers held a slim one-point edge.

NA then dominated the second period, hitting four 3-pointers, two coming from Rawls, and led 27-14 by halftime.

The Raiders managed a 7-0 run in the third after a trey from Jess Bickart and buckets from Jaden Davinsizer and Karchut, but the spurt still left the Raiders with a 36-24 deficit.

Twelve points is a lot to make up, but the task is even more difficult when NA's defense is factored in. The 37 points it allowed Monday is the most the Tigers (4-0, 2-0) have surrendered this season.

“They can all defend,” said Epps. “That makes it really tough on an offense.”

“There's still a couple of concepts that are off right now,” Tigers' coach Spencer Stefko said of his defense. “Conceptually, we're not very good right now, but we're making up for it with energy and hustle. The older girls are doing a great job of setting an example.”

Groetsch, a junior guard, went off in the second half, when she scored 20 of her points.

“She's been a starter since her freshman year,” said Stefko. “She impacts the game in every area and is the kind of kid you build a program around.”

Epps added of Groetsch: “She can score inside and outside. She has a great outside shot (hitting five 3-pointers Monday) and she's active all over the floor.”

As for Karchut, who averaged nine points per game last year, her improvement near the basket will be key if the Raiders are to make a run at the playoffs.

“She's hungry,” said Epps. “She's asking for the ball.”

Stefko is also impressed with Karchut's play.

“All that potential as a young player a few years ago, she's now living up to it,” he said.

The Raiders (3-2, 1-1) host another section game Thursday against Norwin.
