KC runs past Brockway
BROCKWAY — If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
It turned out to be the perfect axiom for Karns City as it went to the ground early and often to roll to a 43-14 season-opening win over Brockway Friday.
The Gremlins (1-0) put the ball on the ground 53 times and picked up 345 yards in the victory.
“That's what we've been working on all week,” Karns City coach Joe Sherwin said. “We're very comfortable with our offensive line and they've done well throughout the preseason, so I was looking forward to seeing what they could do. And we've got some quality backs that can carry the ball, so I'm pleased with the progress.”
Karns City certainly showed that it had a variety of options to choose from when it came to running the ball as 11 different Gremlins had at least one carry in the game.
“Last year, we kind of kept it to just a few guys,” Sherwin said. “But, this year we've got several guys that can carry the ball and that's Karns City football. We want to have numerous threats.”
Quarterback Anthony Kamenski had the most success as he rushed for 153 yards and a score on 11 carries while Mitchell Kelsea carried seven times for 26 yards and three scores and Hunter Rowe had 69 yards and a score on 15 attempts.
It didn't take the Gremlins long to establish the ground game as took the opening kickoff and went 71 yards in eight plays, including seven on ground, for the opening score.
That came on a 1-yard plunge by Kelsea with just under nine minutes left to play in the first quarter.
After that, it was basically all Karns City until it surrendered a couple of late scores.
While the Gremlins managed just one score in the first quarter on Kelsea's run, they found the end zone repeatedly in the second, scoring three touchdowns and a safety to give Karns City a 29-0 lead at the half.
The first touchdown of the second quarter was a 58-yard punt return while short touchdown runs by Kelsea accounted for the other two.
The safety came on a high snap in the Brockway end that went over quarterback Connor Ford's head and eventually out of the end zone.
Kamenski started the clock moving with a 24-yard touchdown run on the Gremlins' first possession of the second half which opened up a 36-0 lead while a 3-yard run from Hunter Rowe early in the fourth made it a 43-0 game and capped the Karns City scoring.
The defense kept Brockway in check throughout, limiting the Rovers to just 194 yards of total offense in the game with more than half of that coming on Brockway's two scoring plays.
One was a 47-yard touchdown run by Jon Wood while the other was a 59-yard catch-and-run from Connor Ford to Wood for the final score.
Karns City will now travel to Punxsutawney Friday.
