A man is accused of strangling his wife during a domestic dispute early Wednesday at their Butler home.

The victim ended up at the hospital, authorities said, and her husband, 44-year-old Timothy R. Schmeider, landed behind bars on felony and misdemeanor charges in the altercation, which took place around 12:35 a.m.

Butler police began their investigation after being called around 2 a.m. to Butler Memorial Hospital, where they found the victim, according to charging documents.

Police said she had visible injures on her upper arms and she complained of back and neck pain.

The woman told police that she and Schmeider had gotten into an argument earlier at their home on the 400 block of Shore Street.

She recounted that he grabbed her from behind and placed her in a stranglehold, documents said, “causing her to blackout and see flashes of light.” He allegedly threw her to the ground.

Police said the victim told them that when she tried to call for help, the defendant “took her phone and broke it to prevent her from calling.”

District Judge Lewis Stoughton arraigned Schmeider on a felony charge of strangulation and a misdemeanor charge of simple assault. He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail following arraignment.
