WORTH TWP — State police believe a head-on crash involving a car and a triaxle truck last year was no accident.

Both drivers were injured in the wreck on Route 108. Zachary D. Ilgen, 22, of Worth Township, who was behind the wheel of the car, had to be flown to a Pittsburgh hospital.

Fifteen months after the crash, police have accused Ilgen of deliberately driving his vehicle into the truck.

According to court documents, before the collision he allegedly told a woman that he was “going to crash his car and die.”

He is reportedly still hospitalized and will be arraigned in August on felony assault and other charges that police filed last week.

Authorities said Ilgen was traveling west on Route 108 near Ashley Lane, just after 5 a.m. March 1, 2018, when his car crossed into the opposing lane, colliding with an eastbound triaxle truck.

Slippery Rock volunteer firefighters had to rescue Ilgen, who was trapped in his vehicle. Police at the scene described his injures as “serious.” He was not wearing a seat belt.

A medical helicopter eventually flew him to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh.

The truck, driven by Matthew L. Laney, struck a tree following the collision, busting its fuel tank. About 125 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into a small runoff stream that leads to Slippery Rock Creek.

Butler County's Hazardous Materials Team had to clean up the spill.

Laney was taken by ambulance to Grove City Medical Center with minor injuries. He was wearing a seat belt.

The crash apparently raised police suspicions from the onset. Upon arriving at the scene, investigators said, troopers learned of a call that a police dispatcher had just taken from a woman.

She advised that Ilgen had left her house saying he was going to “drive as fast as he could, crash and hopefully die,” documents said.

Troopers said an investigation later determined that Ilgen “intentionally swerved in front of the (truck) in an attempt to strike it head on.”

On June 10, police charged him with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, simple assault, harassment and disregarding traffic lanes.

He is to be arraigned Aug. 7 at the office of District Judge Bill O'Donnell in Slippery Rock.
