Police say bad breakup leads to man's arrest

Daniel Wehner
2 claim he tried to stab them

ADAMS TWP — Apparently upset over a breakup, a township man is accused of attempting to stab his ex-girlfriend and her ex-husband with a knife.

Daniel R. Wehner, 55, was arraigned Thursday on felony and other charges in the alleged weekend incident on Sunny Hill Drive in Adams Township. He was later placed in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail.

Township police said they were called to the home around 1:45 p.m. Sunday for a domestic dispute. It was reported that Wehner had armed himself with a knife during the incident. He later fled in a car.

Officers got to the house and spoke to the victims — identified as Wehner's former girlfriend, who had a bruise on her right arm, and her former husband, who apparently was not injured, according to charging documents.

The woman told police that earlier in the day she had told the defendant to “move out” of the home where the couple had been living together. She called her ex-husband to come over and change the locks.

The man said that as he was changing the locks, Wehner grew “verbally aggressive and came running at me with a knife and attempted to stab me in the throat multiple times.”

Police described the suspected weapon as a folding pocket knife.

When the defendant's ex-girlfriend tried to intervene, the man recounted, Wehner “continued swinging the knife and cut her right arm.”

Wehner is accused of still wielding the knife while chasing the other man into the kitchen. The man told police he side-stepped the alleged assailant and retreated to the porch and onto the yard.

He said when he called 911, the defendant drove away. Police obtained an arrest warrant for him Monday. He was arrested and booked into the prison Wednesday night.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton arraigned Wehner on two felony charges of aggravated assault and two misdemeanor charges of simple assault. He also is charged with two summary counts of harassment.

Stoughton in setting bail ordered the defendant to have no contact with either victim.
