The county commissioners on Wednesday approved the purchase of 600 double-pack Narcan nasal spray kits.

Naloxone, sold under the brand name Narcan, is used to help revive someone who has overdosed on opioids.

The cost of $75 per kit will be covered through a grant. There is no cost to the county.

The kits will be distributed to treatment providers, recovery houses, school nurses, community members and others.

Some kits will be kept at the county government building, where all employees are trained in the administration of naloxone.

The majority of the grant funding that paid for the kits from successful bidder Adapt Pharma is from the federal government.

Commissioner Kevin Boozel said the federal government is interested in mass distribution of naloxone to appropriate agencies, and wants to make naloxone available in every location where an automated external defibrillator has been placed.

The sheriff’s office provides its own Narcan kits to law enforcement.
